Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art through her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as nurse, so she could indulge her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was socially aware and taught her to make use of the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English and African American studies. When she was a student DuVernay became interested in producing for the broadcast media. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the waste belonging to one of the jury. In the course of her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
